Community Guidelines

Last Updated: April 24, 2026  ·  Effective Date: April 24, 2026

Welcome to Whim. Our platform exists to cure boredom by connecting university students with spontaneous real-world events happening right now. To keep Whim a safe, authentic, and enjoyable space for everyone, we ask every member of our community to follow these guidelines. These rules apply to all content and conduct on Whim, including event listings, event chat messages, profile information, images, and in-person behavior connected to Whim events.

1.

Our Core Values

Authenticity

Be real. Use your real identity, post real events, and represent yourself honestly. Whim is not a place for personas, fake events, or deceptive behavior.

Safety

The safety of our community comes first. Every feature of Whim is designed with user safety in mind, and we expect users to prioritize safety in every interaction.

Spontaneity

Whim is about seizing the moment. Events are short-lived, last-minute, and local. Respect the spirit of the platform by keeping events genuine and timely.

Inclusivity

University life brings together people of diverse backgrounds. Whim is a welcoming space for all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic.

2.

Who Can Use Whim

2.1Eligibility

Whim may require institutional email verification (such as a .edu address) for registration or certain features. Where such verification is required, you must provide a valid institutional email address you are authorized to use and accurately represent any associated affiliation. Eligibility requirements may change at Whim's discretion.

2.2Age Requirement

You must be at least 18 years of age to use Whim. Persons under 18 are not permitted to use the Service.

2.3Identity Honesty

You are expected to use your real name and represent your identity honestly on Whim. Pseudonyms, aliases, and fictional personas are not permitted. Misrepresenting your identity is a violation of these guidelines.

2.4One Account

Each person may have only one Whim account. Creating additional accounts to evade enforcement, access a banned account, or misrepresent your identity is strictly prohibited.
3.

Event Standards

Events are the heart of Whim. All events must meet the following standards:

3.1Events Must Be Real

Every event you post must be a genuine activity that is actually going to happen. Do not post fake events, placeholder events, or events you have no intention of hosting.

3.2Events Must Happen Within 24 Hours

Events on Whim are intended to be spontaneous and near-future. All events must be scheduled to occur within 24 hours of posting.

3.3Accurate Information Required

Your event's title, description, time, and location must be accurate and truthful.

3.4No Misleading or Bait Events

Do not create events with misleading titles, descriptions, or images designed to attract attendees under false pretenses.

3.5No Charging Attendees Without Disclosure

If your event has an entry fee, cover charge, or any cost to attendees, you must clearly disclose this in the event description before people join. Surprise fees are prohibited.

3.8Event Images

Cover images for events must not contain nudity, graphic violence, hateful imagery, or other prohibited content as defined in our Content Policy.

3.9One Event at a Time

Do not flood the platform with duplicate or near-duplicate events. Creating multiple listings for the same event is prohibited.

3.6 No Events for Illegal Activity

Events must not be created to facilitate illegal activities, including but not limited to:

  • Unlawful distribution, sale, or use of controlled substances
  • Underage drinking events (events where the primary purpose involves alcohol for under-21 participants)
  • Illegal gambling
  • Trespassing or events at locations you are not authorized to use
  • Events designed to facilitate harm to others
4.

Social Interaction Standards

4.1Treat Everyone With Respect

Every Whim user is a real person. Treat all users with basic dignity and respect, whether in group chats, through direct interaction, or at in-person events.

4.2No Harassment

Harassment of any kind is strictly prohibited. This includes persistent unwanted contact, threats of any kind, intimidation, targeted ridicule or humiliation, and sending repeated messages after someone has indicated they do not wish to communicate.

4.3No Discrimination or Hate Speech

Whim is an inclusive platform. Content that demeans, dehumanizes, or attacks individuals or groups based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other protected characteristic is strictly prohibited.

4.4No Sexual Harassment or Unwanted Advances

Unsolicited romantic or sexual advances, comments of a sexual nature directed at another user without their consent, or sexually explicit messages are prohibited.

4.5No Bullying

Whim is not a place to gang up on, single out, or bully other users. Coordinated attacks or campaigns against individual users are prohibited.

4.6No Stalking

Do not use information obtained through Whim to track, monitor, or follow another user's movements or activities against their wishes.

4.7Respect Boundaries

If another user blocks you, do not attempt to contact them through other means, create new accounts to circumvent the block, or show up to their events.
5.

Chat Standards

5.1Event Chats Are Shared Spaces

Event group chats are visible to all attendees of an event. Remember that your messages are seen by everyone in the group.

5.2Messages Are Permanent

Once sent, chat messages cannot be edited or deleted by users. Our platform intentionally preserves chat history for the duration of an event. Think carefully before you send a message.

5.3Stay On Topic

Keep your messages relevant to the event. Excessive off-topic content or flooding a chat with repetitive messages is prohibited.

5.4No Spam or Self-Promotion

Do not use event chats to advertise businesses, solicit followers or subscribers, distribute affiliate links, or promote services unrelated to the event.

5.5No Sharing Others' Private Information

Do not share another person's private information — including their contact details, address, or anything they shared in confidence — in a group chat or elsewhere on the platform.

5.6No Hate Speech or Slurs

The prohibition on hateful content applies equally to chat messages. Slurs, derogatory language, and hate speech are not tolerated in event chats.
6.

Profile Standards

6.1Honest Identity

You are expected to represent your genuine identity on your profile, including using your real first and last name. Do not impersonate another real person, fictional character, celebrity, Whim employee, or any organization.

6.2Accurate University Affiliation

Your listed university must be the institution associated with your registered email address. Do not claim affiliation with an institution you are not actually affiliated with.

6.3Appropriate Profile and Banner Images

Profile photos and banner images must be appropriate for a general university audience. Prohibited images include nudity or sexually explicit imagery, graphic violence or gore, hateful symbols or imagery, and images designed to impersonate another person.

6.4Clubs and Organizations

If you list club or organization affiliations, they must be real organizations at your institution that you genuinely participate in. Do not fabricate affiliations.
